Morgan Cemetery
History:
Morgan Cemetery is located on Capital Ave. S.W., south of Battle Creek in Section 2 of Leroy Township. It was laid out in 1839-40 on land donated by Joshua Robinson, and was known as Robinson Cemetery for a number of years.
In 1867, William Morgan purchased land from Walter J. Swart, and on a knoll surrounded by this land was the little Robinson Cemetery. It was old then and covered with weeds and briers, and not liking it's unsightly appearance, Mr. Morgan proceeded to clean it up. As the cemetery needed more room, he sold small parcels of land on three different occasions until it became a three acre tract.
It may be that because of his interest in the cemetery, and the additions from his own land, the name of Robinson was slowly dropped and it became known as Morgan Cemetery.
Among the first two burials at Morgan Cemetery are that of Rebeca Moon, 71 years old, who died April 7, 1839, and that of Betsy Robinson, daughter of Joshua and Harriet Robinson, who died August 18, 1839, at the age of 12 years.
